Do you feel stuck as a designer? š¤
Let me tell you why teaching makes you a better designer.
I wasnāt a good student in school.
My grades were terrible, I was always sleeping during classes and I didnāt really give a damn.
I didnāt care about any subject besides art, and at that time I had no idea Iād end up becoming a designer and loving what I do.
In college, I studied Graphic Design, and most subjects interested me. Itās easy to give a damn about something you care about, especially when you obsess over it.
I started mentoring students in early 2019 when Fabio Muniz from Awari asked me if I wanted be part of the mentors community. At the beginning I felt like an impostor āWho am I to be teaching something?ā but that feeling went away really fast and I started to enjoy mentoring students about UX, design, and career.
At the same time when you teach something to someone, you have to know that thing upside down and explain that in a way that is easy and simple to understand.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, I had the pleasure of teaching UX at the Awari Intensive course. I had to teach three live classes per week for four months.
While working with clients during the day, I had the opportunity to teach at night. Teaching what I love allowed me to meet interesting new people and learn from them.
If you feel stuck in your career as a designer, start by giving advice and helping others with what you know. Many people offer free mentoring, and even if you think you know everything, you can always learn something when keeping an open mind.
Remember that there are always people who know less than you and people who are way ahead of you. Approach your career with an open mind, start helping others, and youāll find that youāre helping yourself in the process.
Oh and yes, donāt be an asshole.
Did I miss anything?
